For the Achter de Façade exhibition (2024) in the Mariakerk in Vught, I created a series of ink paintings on mulberry paper centred around the koi. The church became an important source of inspiration. Its soaring vaults, stained-glass windows and contemplative atmosphere transformed the space into an imagined underwater world in which the fish could move freely.
Across many cultures and religions, the fish is a powerful symbol of transformation, abundance, freedom and the search for unity. I was also inspired by the symbolism of the zodiac sign Pisces, in which two fish swim in opposite directions. In these paintings, their movement reflects a search for balance between the earthly and the spiritual.Koi

Voor de tentoonstelling Achter de Façade (2024) in de Mariakerk in Vught maakte ik een serie inktschilderingen op moerbeipapier waarin de koi centraal stond. De kerk vormde een bijzondere inspiratiebron. Met haar hoge gewelven, glas-in-loodramen en verstilde sfeer leek zij te veranderen in een onderwaterwereld waarin de vissen vrij konden bewegen.
De vis is in veel culturen en religies een krachtig symbool van onder meer transformatie, overvloed, vrijheid en de zoektocht naar eenheid. Daarnaast inspireerde mij de symboliek van het sterrenbeeld Vissen, waarin twee vissen tegengesteld bewegen. In mijn schilderijen komen deze bewegingen samen als een zoektocht naar balans tussen het aardse en het spirituele.
